The C1 level corresponds to proficient users of the language, meaning that a person at this level is capable of performing complex tasks related to work and study. It is important to remember that the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) is a system that defines and explains different levels of spoken and written expression and comprehension for languages such as English. It consists of six levels divided into three main categories: A — basic user, B — independent user, and C — proficient user. Each category is further divided into two sublevels: 1 and 2.

Skills at Level C1

When reading this information, you might ask yourself: what language skills characterize a person who can demonstrate English proficiency at level C1? CEFRL defines the following:

  • He/she can understand a wide range of more complex and longer texts and recognize implicit meaning within them.

  • He/she can express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions.

  • He/she can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic, and professional purposes. He/she can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex topics, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors, and cohesive devices.
